Participants in the 2019 Spelling BeeThe cafetorium was abuzz but quickly quieted as the students walked on stage. The 8th Annual District 146 Scripps Spelling Bee was about to begin. Two students from each District school competed on January 10 to see who would represent the District at the South Cook ISC Scripps Spelling Bee.

In the end, it came down to the same two students as it had in 2017 and 2018. Fifth grade student Gavin Hemminger from Fulton and seventh grade student Maksym Sierak from Central went a record-breaking 34 rounds, when Maksym was declared the winner. In all, the Bee lasted 42 rounds.
